One night in this joint would

bankrupt my travel budget

for a year. The NOVA
PARK ELYSEES hotel in
Paris offers royai suites from
$1,087 a night plus 16.5%
V.A.T. (value added tax).
With your 12 rooms you get
3 terraces, a private pool, a
stock exchange ticker, three
incoming telephone lines,
Rolls Royce limo service
from the airport or your
private yacht, a bar and
probably a bunch of “lords
a'leaping.”

Poor folks can get a single
room for $160. All prices in
American dollars.

If you are interested in an
oddball tour of New York,
try Howard Goldberg’s
Tours (300 West 53rd St. -
(212). 265-2663. His com-
pany, “Adventure on a
Shoestring” charges $30 a
year for membership but
non-members can come
along for $4.50, if there's
room. Some might not be to
your liking - chatting with
vampire researchers or heart
transplant surgeons - but the
brewery tours and backstage

The quote, which ap-

peared in one of our daily
newspapers, frightened me
even more. “Since the two
were in a closed room
without being related, it
would have been easy for
them to commit anything
obscene.” Tell me, please,
how the authorities
discovered the kiss?

Since prompt sentencing
is rare in many countries, |
wonder how many months
this couple waited in jail
before they got to serve their
legal ten days. Also, if one
_kiss is “committing an action
that could be harmful to the
general public,” imagine the

sentence for a_ behind-
closed-doors candlelight
seduction. Remember,

alcohol is illegal in some
countries, so hold the wine.
Might save you 20 years.

Since I'm planning a
Cruise in the near future, [ve
been working out my travel
budget to include extra
expenses. Tipping - don’t kid
yourself, it’s a must on
almost all ships - takes a big
chunk. For your cabin
steward, $1.50-2.00 a day.
For the dining room
steward, $2.00 plus a buck
for the busboy. All figures,
per person, American §.

The other large expense -
but almost always worth the
money - is shore excursions.
Since my cruise includes
Egypt and Israel, I'll buy
every tour I can get. Full day
tours, including lunch, can

choices. I always check with
ship's personnel before I
make final choices - they've
either been on the tours or
heard all the flack. Anyway,
don’t forget this cost in your
cruise budget.

Aren't our local gardens
beautiful this time of year?
I'd sure like to keep them
that way! Many travellers
defy our government
regulations and smuggle
seeds and cuttings from
overseas, planting their
illegal haul in their garden -
perhaps next door to you.
Diseases and pests, not
native to Canada, can get a
foot in the door that way
with the _ potential of
destroying our gardens. If I
hear tales of anything of this
nature, I'll turn the offenders
in - and I hope you will too.

important, that I'd known
but forgotten. Certain over-

available in the USA. My
experience with this came
many years ago. Bran and |
were driving Vancouver to
Medicine Hat, through the

prairies, I'd been entirely
free of it at the coast. Don't
know if it was the dust or the
dog, but halfway along the
route, I got such a case that
my eyes swelled nearly shut.

I bought some other stuff
that did little good and we
raced for the Canadian
