The program opens with the very first performance of Anna Wyman Dance Theatre on Tour, as the company peaks behind the scenes at itself, a smail touring company typical of many others. This will be followed by Hamarstia, a 1979 creation based on Picasso's picture of A Man Sitting. Cadenza is next on the program, another new dance piece based on Les Quatre Saisons by Andre Gagnon, and finally Adastra, which the company’s road manager, Pierre DesMarais, calls “A technicians nightmare” and which is just as complex, artistically. Popular artist Jack Shadbolt has painted a picture based on Adastra which will be sold at the gala to help raise funds for the company. It is a_ nice complement to Hamartia, which as noted earlier, is dance based on a picture. Following the opening night performance, the audience will adjourn to the Vancouver Art Gailery where snacks and an enormous birthday cake will be served and Shadbolt’s 5% by 12 foot painting will be on display. They spent 14 weeks on the road, mostly at the in- vitation of the various towns in which they performed. Which DesMarais says is a “two edge sword.” It saves the company doing its own publicity and taking on the responsibility of filling the theatre; but the reverse side is “if they don’t like you. you'll never be back.” How were the shows received? “Very well” but = in- terestingly the reaction varied on different pieces. A careful choice of four of the six possible pieces had to be made for each performance. Cadenza, for example, was much better received mn the provincial towns where Andre Gagnon still has a fervent following than tt was in Montreal. The eight-member in- ternational troupe will kick off its home season in style with the gala, April 15, and two more performances Friday April 16 and Saturday April 17.
