Adam Gray wasn’t in the
middie of the action during
the opening ceremonies of
the Canada Summer Games
in Kamloops last week: he
was at the front of it.

The 19-year-old rower was
chosen to carry the B.C. flag
during the opening of the Games
before more than’ 10,000  spec-
tators at Hillside Stadium on Sun-
day, Aug. 8.

“SE wasn’t expecting it at all,’’
said Gray. ‘I found out during a
Team B.C. pep rally Saturday and
1} was kind of embarrassed because
all of my teammates were around,

Gray added that the honor was

“*pretty inspirational.”’
In September Gray will return for his
second year of university to Yale,
a traditionally strong rowing
schoo}.

he said of his freshman year at the
Connecticut school. ‘‘People take
their school and their fun seriously
there, just like anywhere else."

Gray said he didn't get into
Yale on grade points alone, noting
that activities outside school were
also taken into consideration.

The Canadian National Rowing
Championships were held recently,
but Gray said the Summer Games
are considered more important.

“ft's a mini-Olympics,’’ Gray
said. ‘It only happens every four
years and it’s a real stepping
stone.’’

Gray is competing in the men's
four with Victoria rowers fain
Brambell, Brett Maicolm and
Graham McLaren.
