24 — North Shore News -~ Friday, October 27, 2000 ARTS BRIEFS The ever sii Martin Millerchip Arts Editor menillerchip@nsnews.com CAPILANO College teacher and North Van resident Marcus Bowcott will open a show of new paintings tomorrow at Bau-Xi Gallery. “Shift” continues Marcus Bowcott’s exploration of water. He has shifted his focus from the vessel to its wake. Bowcott paints the diurnal cycle of the open ocean. The viewer as solo voyager experi- ences the 24 hours of his shift on watch, out of sight of land; moving with the vessel, leav- ing the painted image in his wake. ' Each of Bowcort’s 12 can- vasses advances the sequence of the day and night. Dawn is a narrow hot horizontal line bisecting sea and sky of muted blue. The gathering dark of night carries the viewer into a violent storm of engulfing WIN TICKETS TO waves. The drama of nature is abstracted by Bowcort’s use of sea and sky without other objects. Marcus Bowcott studied at Vancouver School of Art, Ontario College of Art, and the Royal College of Art, London, England. He has been exhibiting since 198-4. “Shift” opens Saturday Oct. 28 with an artist’s recep- tion between 2 and 4 p.m. and continues through Nov. 15.
