Firat teen Marcie Good Contributing Writer LISA Johnson is the first to admit that kids absolutely hate her new business. After you've gone through the rigours of studving traffic laws, practised parallel parking, passed vour driver’s test, and convinced your parents to fet you take the car, the last thing you want is a bumper sticker inviting people to comment on your driving. But parents who subscribe to her service, Johnson says, ire doing it for their teenagers’ own good, Even the naine of her business, S.PY.D. (Society Protecting Young Drivers), tries to give eit a positive spin. “They readily don’t like it,” says the Lynn Valley resident of her reluctant clients. “But they have to understand that it's not meant as a punishment. As long as they are behaving themselves nothing will happen.” The sticker, which cannot be taken off or altered, gives a number to call with any reports of careless driving and a car identification num- ber. A phone service records complaints, and Johnson passes those along to parents. She emphasizes that the information is con- fidential —S.P.Y.D. is not associated with the police or ICBC. Parents who have to drive with the sticker, she says, like to be assured that they won't be penalized. : Since she and her husband, Tom NEWS holo Mike Wakotletd Williamson, started the business several months ago, most of the complaints she has KAYLA iennedy and her auni, Lisa Johnson, who owns a Service for new drivers received were for “things we all do,” like rua- called S.P.Y.D., both drive cars with an alert sticker on the bumper. ning a yellow light, not coming to a complete ‘48 month lease. 1) Echo 1860.00 D.P. - LP. 17,402.00 + iaxes tore ars ” 59 pepe im 95 4 RUNNER __ pps. But Johnson hopes the stickers will be enough of a deterrent to guard against more serious mistakes. Two drivers whe have it on their bumper rather grudgingly admit chat is true. Johnson's sister-in-law, Gail Williamson, subscribed to the service for her 17-year-old daughter, Kayla Kennedy. But while Kavia ases the car, on weekends to drive from their home in Muple Ridge to Langley, her mother also does a lot of highway driving with an hour-and-a-half com- mute. While she originally wanted to keep tabs on her daughter, Williamson says the bumper sticker curbs her own tendencies to get aggres- sive on the road. “You encounter a lot of strange people on the highway, and | can be uptight in the morn- ing,” she said. “You do tend to get caught up in it and this has made me think mice about my driving.” Kennedy said when she first saw the sticker, she felt like her mother didn’t trust her. “At first my back went way up. [just thought it was a way to get me caught and take away my licence,” she said. But it has had a “big-time” impact on her driving, and she even admits-it helps her deal with peer pressure. “My friends will be in the car and say, ‘Pull a fish tail!” and I can say, ‘No way, Pve got this sticker on my back.” It’s a nice leeway.” ‘The service costs $60 for six months or $110 for one year. There is also a $15 one-time registration fee. Pamphlets are available at most Autoplan agencies. To register, call 604-904- 6776. TOYOTA 4RUNHER 4nd © Alr © Pawar Group © Running Boards.
