4- Wednesday, February 25, 1998 - North Shore News District gets ice time From page 1 be cleared to allow parking for 250 cars and two buses. Canlan operates the suc- cessful Burnaby 8-Rinks and 12 other ice sport facilities across Canada and the United States. Under the deal the dis- trict retains ownership or the laid, Cantan builds the ice facility and gets to operate it for 50 years, and the North Shore Recreation Commission rents 2,800 hours of ice time tor the community. “By working in partnership with Canlan we can meet the needs of our ever-growing ranks of hockey plavers and skaters in a way that minimizes the associated costs,” said Mayer Don Bell. According to director of recreation Gary Young, the recreation commission has $137,000 budgeted to subsi- dize 2,000 hours of ice time and will have to. sell the remaining 800 hours at cost. Doyle told the News that the 2,800 hours rented by the commission, a mix of carly morning, late afternoon and primetime hours, is just under one third of the ice time avail- able. Canlan will rent the remainder on the open market at “prices similar to whar is charged in) Burnaby = (8- Rinks),” a rate slightly higher than public facilities. “The freight is going to be paid by the adult hockey plavers pri- marily, but their rate subsi- dizes minor hockey,” said Doyle. He admitted the October opening date would be “some- what of a challenge,” but noted his company has built rinks on tighter deadiines. Hockey season begins in September, but according to Morrison the October startup ot the Windridge-area rink won't be a problem. “We're going to be a month late bur we can jugele around that,” said Morrison. “Canlan are the operators of Burnaby 8-Rinks and we'll have to rent more ice there until we're ready.” Hockey organizers — are Pleased to hear about a pro- posed joint committee to dis- cuss facility and operational matters. Membership will include one representative from Canlan, wo from district and recreation commission staff and three members of the community. yy way) North Van. #10-1199 Lynn Valley Rd.
