3 Group plans a push for new sport facilities By Robert Galster News Reporter SPORTSMINDED West Vancouverites are about to get a new voice. This comes on the heels of the formation of the West Vancouver = Sports — and Recreation Council. Although the group has yet to hold its inaugural meeting, set for this Wednesday, its founder is quite optisnistic. “What we're trying to do is . plan for the future, get some sports areas set aside and get some money,” said Rob Builer. Aside from the desire ito push for better facilities, Buder is also motivated by his experi- ence as a member of the field users’ committec. The committee was initially established nearly two years ago by West Vancouver District council in order to bet- ter represent all the user groups in the municipality. In addition to representatives of the various user groups, the committee also included a parks and recreation staff member, In theory the staff member took recommendations put forth at the committee’s meet- ings to the parks and recreation department which would, in turn, route the best ones to the district’ council for their con- sideration. But, says Butler, that would never happen and somewhere along the line the group’s rec- ommendations would hit a snag. “We were going to parks and recreation with all these ideas ... but it never got to council,” said Butler. “What we're going to do is go direct- ly to council.” Butler goes further, charg- ing thar West Van parks and recreation frustrated more than just outdoor groups vying for playing fields. “Every group-that has been caling with West Van parks and recreation has been com- pletely frustrated,” said Butler. But, West Vancouver parks and recreation’s — Colin Campbell who was the staff member attending all of the ald field users’ committee’s meetings has a different take or what transpired, Campbell said both the parks and recreation depart- ment and the district council have other factors to consider when prioritizing various pro- jects. Vancouver's Rob Butier is enthusiastic about the future of sports in the municipality now that he and other like-minded individuals have formed the sports and recreation council. Butler was a little more forceful in his assessment. “That (the committee) is now defunct,” he said.
