“BAD toys, bad bots..." We all know the tune. We've
all seen the show, COPS: the gritty, true-life ’90s ver-
sion of the old cowboy movies, where we're comfort-
ed by the fact that the good guy always gets his man.
And that things aren’t as bad here in Canada as they
are south of the border. But are they? Lower
Maiatnnd RCM? are poised to introduce what has
1. a become a standard-issue law enforcement tool in
| engiiring big-city America: a helicopter, The copter, complete
reporter’ with infrared and search light, will be used jointly by
several jurisdictions, including North Vancouver, to
track suspects, especially those involved in high-
speed car chases, Despite the advantages, these nighttime acrial patrols are not with-
out their critics. Too noisy and too costly, say some. Too intrusive, say ethers, wary
of the long arm of the law extending hundreds ef feet in the air, and perturbed by
the knowledge that we might be more like our American cousins than we think.

for two hikers stranded
on Black Mountain’
Oct. 7.

Victoria, and: Gail. Luckwell,

40, of Vancouver, were caught
by’ nightfall while hiking in
