The West Vancouver resident,
who works for Bell Realty, is
always looking for potential real
estate buyers and sellers.

When she isn’t pounding the
pavement selling houses, she’s
spending what little spare time she
has trying to get Vancouver-Cen-
tre MP and Defence Minister Kim
Campbeil elected as the first Ca-
nadian ‘woman prime minister.

Campbell is being touted as the
front-runner in the federal Pro-
gressive Conservative leadership
carnpaign to replace outgoing par-
ty leader Prime Minister Brian
Mulroney.

Before moving to West Van-
couver, Mackey used to live in the
Vancouver-Centre riding and has
been involved with the riding
association since 1979 when she
worked on former Vancouver-
Centre MP Pat Carney’s election
campaign.

At that time she was teaching
school in Coquitlam.

Mackey says her job is primari-
ly to provide some infrastructure
for Campbell, something she
might not be abie to do herself as
- a Sitting MP.

“Our job is to work towards
her re-election,’’ says Mackey.

She has a lot of respect for
Campbell and said she admires
her as a politician.

turned on to politics right now

because of Kim. Two hours of my

“The worst time waster of all is
talking on the phone but it’s also
one of the most important jobs,"’
says Mackey.

Asked why she supports Camp-
well for the Tory party leadership,
Mackey replies:

**| have a tremendous amount
of respect and admiration for her
mind. She’s a terrific com-
municator and a superb
motivator. 1 think she’s the
perfect person at this time.

““She’s respected and is a very
clear study. She has a good vision
for the country,’ says Mackey.

The leadership candidates have’

had several public debates since
the campaign began. .

Mackey says the campaign
varies week by week and that she
thought Campbell had won the
first debate but that ‘‘the spin
doctors’’ said Jean Charest did
well.

“The third debate in Calgary
was the most exciting. We’re
prepared for some tough times,”’
says Mackey.

According to a Canadian Press
poll, Campbell currently has the
support of 699 delegates to the
Tory leadership convention, while
Charest has 295.

Campuell in 1983 when she ran
for the post of Vancouver-Centre
