32 - Sunday, July 19, 1992 — North Shore News Breathing life into diving A NORTH Vancouver mechanical engineer has developed a device that provides a surface supply of compressed air for shallow-water diving. Keith Collyer, president of The Atlantic Engineering Co. Lid., developed the C-Breathe floating battery air supply system over a four-year period. Collyer says the product has generated a lot of interest for use in tropical waters, for example during coral reef exploration and tropical fish watchirg. He anticipates that most sales will go to sport divers, diving resort operators and boaters. He already has distributors in place in Fiji and Western Australia. “I’m taking it slowly and build- ing it Up to a steady rate of pro- duction,”’ he said. The idea for the product came to Collyer when he owned « sailboat. He challenged himself to . find a more convenient way to get under a boat to maintain it. With scuba gear, time in the water is limited by the capacity of an oxygen tank. “With this system there are no heavy tanks or you — you just jump into the water,”’ he said. Michael HIGH TECH Collyer has developed three models of the product: @ 150-D sits on a boat deck; @ the 150 floating model is good for depths of up to 15 feet; @ the 200 mode? floats and is good for depths of up to 25 feet. Collyer recommends users of OPTIONS FOR VOLUNTEERS THE FOLLOWING is a selection of volunteer opportunities avail- able through North Shore Com- munity Services (NSCS). © : THE. The three major components of the device are a battery, a com- pressor and a motor. Air is pulled into the system through an intake filter. ir is compressed and pumped into an air reservoir. The user inhales the air through a demand regulator attached to a length of reinforced polyester- lined breathing hese. Collyer initially projects the ‘ focal manufacture of 20 units per month. The B.C. Science Counci! sup- posted the early stagé of project with $25,000 worth of funding. Collyer also received an interest- free loan from the Western Diver- sification Program. “I knew there was a market for it. In the early stage I had to trust my own sixth sense,” he said.
