Dear Editor:

Having much better things to
do with my time | do not read
Doug Collins, but a friend
brought his column of fast Wed-
nesday to my attention.

Mr. Collins is, of course, entitl-
ed to his opinions about my jour-
nalistic ability — I would only
point out to him that | speak to
about 300,000 people per day, five
days a week, am senior columnist
for Equity Magazine and a regular
contributor to The Financial Post.

Evidently there are those who
do not share Mr. Collins’ opinion.

1 certainly do remember work-
ing with Mr. Collins at CJOR in
the early '80s — in fact 1 tried

very hard to save his job for him,

when he was fired. Unfortunately
he had a speech impediment — he
couldn't string two words together
without an “‘uh’’ in between.

In a nice little touch at the end
of his column, Mr. Collins wishes
some radical changes to my
neighborhood. Well, Mr. Editor, I
live in North Vancouver in a
delightful) multi-racial, multi-
cultural neighborhood which
could only be ruined by one thing
— namely that a mean-spirited,
bigoted English immigrant moved

North Shore Heritage Commit-
tee (NSHC) to compliment the
News on its publication of the
serics of drawings by Dorothy
Foster of significant heritage
buildings.

We trust you will continue to
do so as long as they are
forthcoming.

Heritage on the North Shore
is alive and well, duc in no

small part to the News in the
past few years since all three
municipalities enacted heritage
policies and established official
committees as a means of
preserving our heritage.

We thank you and trust you
will continue to play a major
role in this regard.

A RECENT rally in front of the North
Shore News raised the issue of
freedom of speech, and specifically,
whether News columnist Doug
Collins was abusing that freedom.

Our survey team picked up the
phone to find out your opinion on

the issue.

We asked “Do you read Doug §
Collins’ column?'' Of 419 people

35.6% said they always do, 408% #y
said sometimes and 23.6% @%

declared they never do.

Respondents were also asked ‘‘Do
you think Collins abuses his J
freedom of speech?” Almost 65% Hf:
said ‘No.’ 11.5% of people believed
that Collins does abuse freedom of
speech, 16862 did not know and §
78% thought that he orily abused §
