Don’t know about you, but Iam getting a little tired of
the Second World War and the yelling about war
criminals real or imagined that is connected with it. In
particular, I'm tired of the campaign against Kurt
Waldheim that has been orchestrated by the World

Jewish Congress.

It’s not that what happened
didn't happen. But the Second
World War is now several wars
and nearly half a century away,
and atrocities go on all the time
today without the Bronfmans
and other breast-beaters losing
any sleep over them.

Millions have been slaughtered
in Cambodia by the Reds, for in-
stanee. And war crimes have
been common enough in the
Middle East, perpetrated by peo-
ple who are supposed to be pure.

I have no axe to grind for
Waldheim, But a few in-
disputable facts protrude from
the ocean of propaganda that
has surrounded the issue:

A panel of hostile Austrian ex-
perts that examincd his record
for six months couldn't pin a
thing on him. Yes, he is said to
have lied about his war-time ser-
vice, but as far as | know that is
not an indictable offence.

The panel found that he
neglected his human duty to op-
pose war crimes that he knew
were happening. Yugoslavs,
Greeks, Jews, etc. were being
deported to slave labor and
death, and he did nothing about
it.

Is someone joking? There was
Lt. Waldheim, a member of the
German Wehkrimacht serving in
the Balkans as an interpreter,
and he sat on his ass and did
nothing?

What was he supposed to do

or say? ‘‘Excuse me, General,
but you are an asshole and so is
Hitler and 1, Lt. Kurt Waldheim,
wish to register my disgust?"

Would the critics have said
that? Would you?

I know what 1 would have said
—~ bugger all, just like
Waldheim. Unless, that is, 1 was
tired of fife. And that reminds
me that all these moralists that
are on the loose now — including

perpetrated by the Israelis or

their allies in the Middle East.

Menachem Begin, then a plain
terrorist and later a prime
minister of Israel, organized a
raid on the Arab village of Deir
Yassin in which hundreds of old

men, women and children were
slaughtered and stuffed down
wells. He also blew up the St.
David’s Hotel, with in-
discriminate loss of life.

How about some panels on all
that? Those were real crimes,
after all, not just something
about which Begin only knew.

Physiotherapist Tim Hunt will
offer a back course for those in-
terested in learning the practical
applications of back care.

A review of back anatomy and
mechanics will allow for the
demonstration and practice of
various postural alignments, em-
phasizing the role posture plays in
everyday sport and leisure ac-
tivites. A series of specific exercises
will be introduced and praciised
each evening to aid in suppleness
and toning of the back and ab.

Society is offering a one-night lec-
ture, No More Hot Flashes, to be
held on Tuesday, March 8 from
7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Carson
Graham Secondary School.

The evening will focus on the
physiological, emotional and en-
vironmental aspects of this stage of
life. Participants will be shown
how to deal with their concerns in
a positive and supportive manner.

Begin is much honored. He was
even able to come to Canada to
raise bonds.

Nothing has changed. Asa
prominent British editor has
pointed out, General Sharon, a
member of the fsracli cabinet,
“must have known about and
been vicariously responsible for
the massacres in the Sabra and
Chatila camps in Lebanon.”

A large amount of misinfor-
mation is being peddled in this
affair. The photo of Lt.
Waldheim standing among a
bunch of seniors officers (one af
whom was a war criminal) has
become the most-used picture of
the decade.

The Morning Wimp ran it
again two weeks ago, identifying
Waldheim as “second from left,
in Nazi Party ‘Brown Shirts." "
But he was in army uniform, not
Seurmabreilung garb.

The Globe & Mail is also
dopey. It described him recently
in an editorial as ‘‘a high-
ranking intelligence officer with
the Nazis in the Balkans.”’

What can one say, except that
the Globe is the product of
1960s' hippie minds? Its teenaged
editors would hardly know a
Tommy from a Jerry.

Ido not say that Waldheim is
to be admired. I say only that
there is no more reason to make
a fuss about him than about a
hundred others. Nor was our
side always holy. The Americans
murdered 560 German guards
when they liberated Dachau con-
centration camp, and there has
been no row about that. On the
contrary, it has been hushed up.
