In days of rising costs and most- ly fixed incomes on retirement, it is important to know what assistance is available. Government programs do change, and to keep you up to date, lectures are being planned this month at the major North Shore senior centres. The first lecture is on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at North Shore Neigh- bourhood House, 225 East 2nd St., North Vancouver. Call 987- 8138 to register for this free lec- ture. The topic Am J getting all my benefits? will be addressed by qualified speakers. Michael Glavin of the Health and Welfare Canada tncome Security Programs will ex- plain the federal government bencfits such as OAS, GIS and spouse allowance. Joyce Schmalz, volunteer senior counsellor, will outline the provincial government benefits such as GAIN, SAFER, Pharmacare, bus passes and the B.C. medical plan. The second lecture will be on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Silver Harbour Centre, 144 East 22nd St., near the North Vancouver Recreation Centre. Foster home rates hiked MINISTER OF Sociat Services and Housing Claude Richmond recent- ly announced an increase in basic foster home rates. “We are allocating an extra $2 million to the foster home program to provide a substantial rate in- crease for all foster parents. The same iricrease will apply to the Child in the Home of a Relative (CIHR) Program,’’ Richmond said. ‘‘The increase will help foster parents meet rising costs and is in line with other recent rate increases that the ministry has provided for the care of children.” Over 50 per cent of the children in the care of the ministry live in foster homes.
