ACTIVITY AIDE needed on Fri- day afternoons at a drop-in centre THE FIRST in a series of locally produced scuba diving television programs will air May 26 on Shaw Cable, introducing Pacific Diving to North Shore viewers. “I think that diving is really misunderstood in Vancouver,’’ said Ross Hales, service manager at Capilano Divers Supply, which is working on the program. “People think that what’s churned up by the ferries — that brown muck — is what we dive in. The majority of the peosle don’t understand the potenti, ‘Particularly in the summer, there’s some spectacular diving:,’’ Hales said. Pacific Diving’s first program May 26 features interviews with the publisher of a dive magazine, a charter boat operator and a local wetsuit manufacturer. A segment on diving at Whytecliff Park shows non-divers what goes on beneath the waves at this popular and beautiful West Vancouver scuba diving haven. “This is for people who have been to Whytecliff who have seen divers going in when they’re hav- ing their picnic. They can find out what it’s all about.”’ A new show each month will feature diving-related topics such as the sharks of Hornby Island, local shipwrecks and the diving resorts of British Columbia. ‘“We started to do the program to promote diving on the North Shore. ! would like to think that we would inspire some non-divers to give diving a try.” The 8:30 p.m. show airs the last Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday of the month. High school bands battle TWO AWARD-winning North Vancouver high schoo! bands will be performing at the B.C. Festival of the Arts at Duncan on Van- couver Island to June !. Argyle Secondary senior concert _ band and vocal jazz choir will be playing at the five-day event, which draws students from schools all over the province. Handsworth Secondary’s senior band will also vie for a top spot after a showing at the recent Pacific Coast Music Festival quali- fied it for this festival. Handsworth’s band recently returned from Hawaii, where the group was the only Canadian entry in a festival featuring school bands from around the world.
