Whatever the reason, the savings will be worthwhile since the heat Joss through your attic accounts for roughly 10 per cent of your fuel bill. To start with, prepare a safe work site. Hang a light from the rafters, and Jay planks to wadk on so you don't accidentally break the ceiling below. Wear a long sleeved, loose shirt, pants, gloves, goggles, and a helmet if the headroom is low. MOISTURE COLLECTS Moisture contained in the air of your house can collect in the attic when it is carried there by escaping warm air. For this reason, and to save more fuel dollars, you'll want to seal the points of air leakage as much as possible. These occur around electrical wire penetrations, chimneys, the attic hatch, and the tops of parti- See Make Page 12 THERE ARE five easy steps to insulating u..inished altics: 1) Lay temporary flooring and hang worklight. Leave insulation in packages until you are ready to use it. 2) Hf there is no vapor barrics present, a polyethylene barrier must be installed. Cut four to six mil polyethylene approximately four inches wider than the space be- tween the joists. Staple the vapor barrier to the sides of the joist. Care must be (alen to install the vapor barrier toward the warm-in-winter side of the insulation. 3) Insulation should extend fa enough to cover top plate, but should not cover eave vents; if necessary install baffles at the inside of the eaves. 4) Begin laying insulation blankets at outer edge of a(tic, working towards the centve. 5) Fill the spuce between the chimney and wood framing with unfaced insulation.
