Technology saves teeth | DENTISTS are now able to pro- tect children’s teeth from decay by coating them with wear-resistant plastics. Known to dentists as pit and fissure sealants, these plastics con- stitute ‘‘the most dramatic advance in dental decay prevention to come along since the advent of fluorides,’ said Hazel Harper, D.D.S., a Washington, D.C., den- -tist and a consumer advisor for the American Dental Association. As Dr. Harper explained, when a child’s back teeth are developing, microscopic grooves and depres- sions form in the chewing and biting surfaces of the enamel- the hard outer covering on teeth. “These irregularities are places where bacteria and food particles collect,"* she said. ‘‘They’re breeding grounds for decay.”’ Through a process commonly known as bonding, liquid plastics are layered over these rough sur- faces, hardening to form a protec- tive shield. Each tooth can be seal- ed in minutes, without drilling or anesthesia. Studies conducted since the early 1970s show that the sealants are safe and effective in fighting cavi- ties. Richard Simonsen, D.D.S., an assistant professor of dentistry at the University of Connecticut, supervised a study completed fast year that involved 200 Minneapolis children, half of whom had four of their back teeth sealed, while the other half went without sealants. After five years, the sealant group was 94 per cent cavity-free on sealed tooth surfaces; 59 per ernt of the same teeth in the group without sealants were decayed.”” COLUMBIA ARTISTS PRESENTS 1 ¥ i finiandia sinfonletta FIAST TIME IN VANCOUVER Ge Barber Sibelius Chamber Orchestra Conducted by Jorma Panute THE CENTENNIAL THEATRE 2ara & LONSDALE_ NORTH VANCOUVER _ MARCH Gin. 1988 at BOO PM ONE PERFORMANCE ONLY TICKETS $t2 ($8 CO students & semors) VICICBO ang outlets.
