Hi mailbox ><] Fingerprinting defended Dear Editor As a parent, I take excep- tion to being called ‘‘myopic and stupid’’ by J. McDonald (letter of the day, May 30th). Surely this letter is some form of paranoid humor. The first statement made about fingerprinting children shows how ignorant McDonald is of the facts. The police do not keep t fingerprints, the chy parents do. More like Big Mommy than Orwell’s Big Brother. With the increasing number of children going missing, some method of identification is essential. McDonald’s point about registering births is equally ridiculous. If parents want to -collect family allowance, or want their childen to have a legal identity in society, what other choice is there? As far as sending children to school or facing Prosecu- tion, wouldn’t it-he nice to add a few hundreff tliousand illiterate unemployable peo- ple to Canada’s population. The next point, mandatory seatbelt laws, again shows McDonald's ignorance. If McDonald had to attend ac- cident after accident where people had been thrown through windshields etc., he/she may have a different point of view. The additional medical expenses that tax- payers pick the tab up for ts one more reason why seat- belt laws are a good idea. My fourth point of conten- tion is ‘‘submitting tO a photograph to drive a car’’ ft would be great fun fora 15 year old who can’t drive to get someone's pictureless licence, hop on the freeway in Daddy’s car, and wipe out a few innocent people. Not to Stop bombing Kaho’ Olawe OPEN LETTER TO DEFENCE MINISTER JEAN JACQUES BLAIS The B.C. Voice of Women Executive were informed about the naval exercises tak- ing place in the Pacific under the leadership of the United States. Concerned about the fate of the Hawaii island Kaho’ Olawe, we _ protest against Canada’s inclusion in this summer’s naval games. In 1971 Canada was in- vited to participate in RIM- PAC, naval manoeuvres tak- ing place every two years. Besides the U.S.A., other na- tions included are Japan, New Zealand and Austraha. Kaho’ Olawe has been used as a shore shelling target since 197]. The present naval plans ex- pose Kaho’ Olawe to possible destruction by shelling and bombing. Hawan being now a state of the Umon, the en tire island was placed on the United States’ natural register of historic places because of its archaeological historic and cultural significance providing a com- plete link with Hawaii’s im- portant primitive past. The Senate and House of Representatives of the Hawaiian government have asked the American Federal Government to forbid the shelling and bombing. In 1982, the Australian and New Zealand governments did not take part in RIMPAC nor are they this year as a protest against such a mususe of naval weapons. The B.C. Voice of Women desires Canada to _ follow their example and withdraw from RIMPAC immediately. Freda Handford B.C. Voice of Women West Vancouver Fathers Day~ Special! My last point of contention with J. McDonald is his/her fear of Social Insurance cards. With more than 22 million people living jn this country, with over 10% on welfare or UIC, there is no other way of identifying peo- ple and minimizing fraud (which inevitably costs taxpayers.) I would like to think that these ‘‘identification WV voters chose well Dear Editor: It always is easy to mount a soapbox and criticize, like the offbeat critics of London’s Hyde Park Corner. And, often, those who are most vociferous in their criticism are the ones who are least capable of rolling up their sleeves and doing a job. It seems to me that we, in West Vancouver, are most for- tunate in the choice we made when we elected our mayor and municipal council. They’ve done a remarkable job of giving efficient service while, at the same time, keep- ing the lid on taxes. But the credit is not theirs alone; we are the ones who elected them to do a job for us. We should be taking a bow. Les Rimes West Vancouver numbers, photographs and fingerprints’’ help to protect our personal freedoms, not to threaten them. A little paranoia can be healthy. You, J. McDonald should see a doctor. Chris Johnson North Vancouver sellers on the private car market together.
