Hayden celebrates 50 happy years

ON OCTOBER 3,
Norma and I stood together
in the little old church where
! had grown up (somewhat)
and where Norma played the

organ, and there, lo and
behold, we were married!

All four of our parents
were in attendance, as were
Norma’s two brothers and
their wives (one each). The
minister and the best man
were two of my good friends
and class-mates. Norma, of
course, looked beautiful,
which, (feeling about her as |
did then - and do now) was
no surprise to me at all. She
was beautiful before she was
a bride.

And now, on October 3,
1983, Norma and I[ celebrate
the 50 years of our
togetherness. Celebrating
with us will be our two
daughters and their
husbands, our three grand-
daughters and two grand-
dsons. Of course, other
relatives and friends will be
with us for the festivities.

ask, ‘‘What is the secret that
has contributed to your
togetherness over a period of

$0 years?’’ | thought that
question just surfaced in
staged interviews, but no,

people really do ask it even if
just for tun. Then I see a
frightened look on their faces
as it dawns on them that they
may have to sit through it
while we try to answer them.

I have not thought of an
answer until just recently, but
here it is. Our togetherness
has been enhanced because
we have accepted and trusted
each other’s worth sufficient-
ly to allow us to be flexible
and evolving. We have found
sufficient confidence in each
other and life itself and God,
to allow us gradually to trust
the profundity and dynamic
and safe at-homeness of love.
It has been a love that helped
us realize that even IT was a
part of the evolving process.
Love is not static. One does
not comfortably settle in to it
and get used to it. Rather,
one is surprised by it and
lured on by it, gradually com-
