DIANE RAPSKE WHEN DENIM JEAN sales for -men dropped sharply across the continent in 1982, companies made some major overhauls in styling and colors. This fall jeans are soft and comfortable with a_ great deal more detail and design. Colors are clean and clear, and above all, the pant legs are slimmer than ever before. The sharp increase in sales this year is a direct result of the narrow silhouette, ac- cording to Ric Mclsaac. manager of “317” at the Bay in downtown Vancouver. “Last year the average pant bottom was 18 to 20 inches around. This year the pant average 18 inches and we have pants with legs as narrow as 13 inches around the bottom,” Mclsaac said. People wonder if they have seen this phenomenum before and they have. Followers of the James Dean and Elvis look of twenty years ago made sure their pants were as tight as possible. MclIsaac assures that though the bottoms are tight this year the pants are loose at the thighs toallowfor comfortable wear. Another 50s touch is the shorter pant leg. “They are wearing pants short enough to make sure the socks show,” MclIsaac explained, and the loafer style shoes make the look complete. Stiff, dark blue jeans collected dust on the shelf last year, but when the same styles came back this year specially “stone-washed” they were gone as fast as they arrived. You don’t have to wear the jeans for three months before they have that soft, comfortable look. “With stone-washing they have the pre-worn look and feel,” McIsaac said. The “stone-washing process apparently does not break down or weaken the fibre. “Companies have gone back to the ‘5 pocket’ basics. There’s a lot of detail, stitching around the pockets, seaming to give the layered look.” Jeans that last year had only two pockets and a little computer style stitching, have five pockets now and stitching across the knee and thigh giving the appearance the pants are made from several different pieces of material. Through a “double-dye” process there are jeans that are one color such as yellow on the inside and green on the outside. Roll up the bottom cuff and you have a two-tone pair of jeans. ral Danskin, Funskin and Cameidance for all your exercise and danceweoar needs Stirrup and footed tights In nylon and cotton as Habe Coretet fk Wy be Hyg: woe pa Dba | et well as a wide range of cotton and nylon bodysults Oh - Gs Ninw West tad ae ae
