A7 - Sunday, June 5, 1983 - North Shore News Dear Editor: I am very disappointed at the reporting in the Sunday News concerning the recom- mendations of the District's Solid Waste Committee. The impression was given that the committee’s unanimous recommendation to involve consultants was due to the fact that the committee could not reach accord. This is simply not the case. The committee’s terms of reference which’ were adopted by council last December addressed some specific tasks. The first — “Examine the existing operations and iden- tify and evaluate the present problems associated with the landfill; and identify all Safe sprays available Dear Editor: I was shocked to read, in Chris Lloyd's article of May 15, that Agriculture Canada will probably choose a known carcinogen, carbaryl (Sevin) to spray North Van- couver areas because of a Gypsy Moth outbreak. The article does not give much information about an alter- native spray, Bacillus Thur- ingiensis (B.T.), that is cater- pillar specific and is 90 to 100 per cent effective. A similar biological control is nuclear polyhedrosis virus (N.V.P.) which will soon be on the market under the trade name Gypchek. The public needs up-to date, fully researched infor- mation so that we can effec- tively stop ecologically un- sound practices. Helen Hughes North Vancouver methods and costs of reduc- ing or eliminating the pre- sent problems” — has now been completed by the com- mittee. The next - “Examine the proposed alternatives and identify and evaluate alter- natives to the landfill; iden- tify the social, ecological and economic impacts of each alternative; and make relative comparisons” — has not been discussed by the committee as they are seen to be of a technieal nature requiring professional exper- tise. For this reason the committee unanimously recommended to council that consultants be used for this particular job and coun- cil unanimously supported thal request. I might further point out that the necessity for the use of consultants to cover part of the Terms of Reference was foreseen in my report to council last December wherein it was noted: “The Committee is recognized as being an ad- visory body to council and as such has no direct powers to engage outside consultants or assistance with respect to determining such informa- tion. However, it is further recognized that should the committee deem it necessary/desirable to in- volve such additional exper- lise, recommendations will be made to council with respect to effectively carry- ing out the functions of the committee.” That is what the commit- tee has done. The final item to be ad- dressed by the committee — “Recommend for the Premier Street landfill site final usage figure’ with respect to total areas of fill: and heights of fill of existing and under-use areas” — will be tackled in due course. I appreciate that landfills and solid waste (more com- monly known as dumps and garbage) make headlines quite regularly these days; however, I want to set the record straight. While the committee has undertaken a most difficult and controversial job and the members hold differing views on the subject, there is accord on what we can and cannot do in terms of our ex- Cyclist agrees with mayor OPEN LETTER TO W.VAN MAYOR DERRICK HUMPHREYS Re.
