If you are going away, the “due back” date on books can be extended to six weeks for your con- venience. Perhaps the modern-day Aphrodite, the beautiful goddess of love, would return to the sea with her tennis racket and her books for summer reading. If she didn’t quite know what books to choose, she could use Lewis Carroll's poem as a guide and find out about shoes and ships and sealing wax and cabbages and kings. and “Shoes Were For Sunday” by Molly Weir is the recollection of how the author spent her early years in Glasgow. The concrete jungle of the Glasgow tenements where, despite crippling poverty and overcrowding, there was endless fun — from the impromptu recitations to the delights of the annual fair. And dominating her hfe was Grannie, whose tough in- dependent spirit gave Molly so rich a life in such pitiful surroundings. Ships are always an in- teresting topic. Richard Adams, who gave us the brave rabbits of “Watership Down”, has written an unusual book called “The Ship’s Cat.” It is beautifully illustrated by Alan Aldridge. Just the thing to look at while lazing on the beach. As for sealing-wax, that subject could lead her into the “Joys of Beekeeping” by Richard Taylor, because sealing-wax was first made from bees-wax. But if that seemed like a lot of work, she could meander into the heraldry section of the West Vancouver Library, sear- ching for crests, and she might choose a book called “The Arms, Flags and Emblems of Canada.” An interestingly designed book showing the flags and floral emblems of Canada. As the lovely purple violet is most frequently seen in New Brunswick, it was chosen as their flower in 1936. In the same section, another curiosity-satisfying pleasure is seeing what the signatures of saimts and sinners throughpout_ the world looked like. The book is “The Stein and Day Book of World Autographs.” Now take cabbages. In the book, “House Plants for the Purple Thumb,” by Maggie Baylis, it describes how to grow cabbages in pots for attractive foliage nad delicate color. Start seeds in July to November — they develop deep pinks, lavender and purple hues as well as cream markings. “Vegetable Gardening & Cooking,” by Hoobler, has some delicious cabbage recipes. One for Cabbage Relish and another called German Red Cabbage using bacon, onions, apples, caraway seeds and red wine. (Yummy). The last subject: many books have been written about kings. However an unusual one is called the “Saxon Kings,” which author +Richard Humble says history has ignored for some inexplicable reason. It is a story that makes history very exciting, all about King Arthur § and Edward ‘the Confessor.’ In fact, all of them from Aelle, the first King of the South Saxons, down to the defeat of Harold Godwinesson at Hastings With her bag full of these reading treats, Aphrodite is well on the way to enjoying her holiday. 106 West 3rd St North Van.
