Lansdowne was born in Hong Kong, and with the evacuation of the colony in 1940, was relocated to Northern China and then to Victoria, B.C. A victim of polio, Lan- sdowne’s confinement to bed was alleviated by sunny days in the garden. “He took a great interest in watching all the birds... By the time he was three or four he knew any bird by its - song or his flight,” his mother, also a painter, said. Working summers in the laboratory of the Provincial Museum, Lansdowne considered becoming a biologist, but after suc- cessful exhibits of is works in Toronto and New York, he continued with the study of birds, his greatest love. Almost every North American bird is represented in the exhibit; from the snowy owl, puffin and heron, to every sort of game bird and the lowly Contropus Viréns. The scenes are taken from nature, each animal poised in its flight, hunt, or rest. Lansdowne works on a 7:00, 9:30. Park Royal 7:15, 9:30. Mat. Sun.-Mon. 1:45. Said. “There is something mystical about birds, * perhaps because they can fly and humans can't.” Modest and soft spoken, he is concerned with being “looser and freer” in his quest for perfection. His recent works are larger and bolder, usually life size, ‘which he finds easier and more accurate. Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker was recognized for her exhaustive work as curator, in gathering together the collection, many on loan from anonymous sources and from the McMillan- Bloedel collection. Complemented by the recently restored Emily Carr collection, the show is an ~ education for the whole family, and can be enjoyed until October 25.
