‘By MIKE HOCEVAR Put it this way: the Nor Wes Caps are acting like contenders by going to Vancouver Island and ~ beating the Nanaimo Clippers and the Cowichan Valley Capitals. _ Those victories meant the Caps put together a three gamne win streak for the first time. in their one and a half seasons in the B.C. Junior Hockey League, ‘following last week's 20-1 thrashing of Comets. Unfortunately the streak was halted by Vancouver Bluchawks on Sunday as the Caps were physically worn out from having to play three games on three nights. With lots of hustle and fabulous passing displays, the Bluehawks took the match 7-5, Sixteen year old Randy Heath, who played with North Shore Winter Coquitlam Club’s Midget A squad last year, erupted for three goals against the host Caps. The Caps. were looking strong in the latter part of the second period and scored with less than a minute remaining to narrow the score 6-5, but were ‘ blanked in the third period. €aptain Ron-Slatten had two breakaways in the last minutes of the game and coudn't beat Hawks goalkeeper Ian McEachern. Bluchawks also tallied into an empty net as Marty Wakelyn was summoned to the bench by coach Jim Hall in an effort to tie the visitors. With.15 minors and one five minute high sticking major, the ‘Caps had penalty problems and weren't able to control things the way they'd have liked. Todd Semeniuk with a pair and Dave Brownlie, Larry Cahon and Derrick Vopelka scored for Caps. On Saturday it was a more pleasant story. Playing the Coast leading Clippers before a jam packed house in Nanaimo, the Caps performed tirelessly and stunned everyone with a 6-3 triumph. Grant Harris led the scorers with two goals and two assists, while linemates Brownlie and Cahan chipped in singles. Fred Ledlin and Slatten, on a shorthanded situation, tallied others. Bowen added an assist on Slatten’s effort. At Duncan on Friday, the Caps and Capitals traded the lead several times but neither team was cver in front by more than a goal. Caps are currently = six points behind fifth place Bluchawks but are ahead of the last place Comets by the same number of points. Their record stands at 14 . wins and 24 losses.
