Naik, has finally managed to arouse my anger and irritation enough to write you a letter in response. In brief, M. Naik decided to join the Hospital Board and vote for Pro Life board members, believing tax- payers monies shouid not be paying for abortions, and ‘it is up to the lady to take the necessary steps to avoid pregnancy.” Well, I do not think taxpayers monies should be paying for the thousands of heart attacks taking place every year in BC caused by a lack of personal care — such as obesity, lack of physical fitness, stress, smoking and drinking. If you think pregnancy is a self-induced misery so is a heart attack in most cases. Furthermore, pregnancy takes two people. Hence the responsibility should be on both people. And before you prescribe the woman to take the necessary measures let me make you aware of a few facts: The side effects or oral contraceptives are: weight gain, depression, lethargy, fatigue, headaches, irritability, nervousness, sterilization, leg cramps, hypertension and = yeast infection. The side effects of intra- uterine devices (IUD) are: uterine cramps, heavy menstrual flow, yeast in- fections of the ovaries and of course a diminished contra- ceptive effectiveness. Is that the ‘kind of pregnancy prevention M. Natk calis for? It would be naive to think of restraining our rather liberal morals and return to the middle ages. Why doesn’t the male take the responsibility? Just for interest sake, the male pill had been invented, manufactured and perfected back in 1945-50, but it had the same side effects as the present female contra- ceptives which was not acceptable to the then male - dominated world. Hence it was discarded and the onus for avoiding conception and taking the side effects put on the woman. It is strange that Pro Lifers want to sacrifice one life for the sake of another. If one looks at the statis- tics for those who require abortions, one finds mostly women aged 14-18. Do they have the money to pay for an abortion? On the other hand, you have the 50 year old middle aged man who has been sitting at his desk for the last 30 years, smoking away, going home to a fat laden dinner and beer, plus a nice Savings account. Does he have the money to pay for his heart attack? The answer does not he with discriminating against people and their needs. The taxpayers of today will be aged of tomorrow who will be supported by the generation of tomorrow. And as far as abortions go, the problem will not be solved by joining the Pro ~ Life or the Abortion Committee but by joining an active group who is not centered around the politics of hospital boards but ac- tually tries to prevent pregnancy in the first place. This being done by further research into contraception methods and going out there talking, teaching and ex- plaining to the young adults what is available. Restric- tions and threats usually have the opposite effect. Finally, no one has the right to punish an unborn infant to grow up as an orphan, adopted or = un- wanted child. Ulrika Wallersteiner West Vancouver Only relocation would be effective Dear Editor: I refer to the letter from T. Taerum on the subject of Hooker Chemicals. The writer comments that Hooker was built first — maybe? But no-one foresaw the explosive residential development on the North Shore and in particular east of 2nd Narrows Bridge. Hooker is situated right in this bottleneck, blocking the obvious escape route, in a heavy traffic area, and next to 2 lumber yards and smaller chemical industries. In a recent two week period, there have been two Contraceptives not Dear Editor: I am writing in response to a letter that appeared in the NEWS on August 3, 1980, regarding the tissue of abortion.
