Van THE MOVIES are making a second run in West Van- couver, By Chris Wong Contributing Writer Park Royal Shopping Centre management and an independent cinema operator have reached an agreement to reopen the imail's triple-screen theatre. Mall director Rick Amantea said the cinema complex should be open for business by the end of the summer. “We're ecstatic, and we will do significant renovations to the building so it will look a lot more current,’ he said. Tom Lightburn, the new opera- tor of Park Royal Cinemas, said renovation work on the theatre has already started. The renova- tions will include construction of a new lobby. The 1,000-seat, second-run cinema complex will operate with a discount pricing policy, Lightburn added. Two of the three sereens_ will feature general movie fare, Lightburn said. The third screen will feature what the cinema operator called “specialty product’ — art films. One of oldest franian businesses, after more than 10 years of franian ownership, is Pars Deli, at [8th and Lonsdale. When Gholam Reza Sefiddashti bought the shop in 1982, it was an Htalian deli, Over the years it has developed an increasingly franian flavor, selling foods from all over the Middle § Sk. The shelves are full of evervihing from ‘ime juice and 15 different varieties of halva to Fard’s. Persian Pistachio Nougat and hand-made cotton candy from Ram Bakksh Co, (Produce of The Ielamic Republic of Iran). Other products come from Lebanon and Syria. In one part of the store, two shelves reach up to the ceiling, filled with books in Farsi. Sefiddashti says the number of Jranian businesses up and down Lonsdale really started growing two or three years ago, Farhad Farazady’s rug shop, located near 14th and Lonsdale, sells a range of Persian rugs in different sizes and patterns, the Farzady was a carpet dealer in Germany. He came here for per- sonal reasons. He says he gets a mixture of Iranian customers and people from other communities. Many of the people running businesses have other skills. Dashti, for example, worked as an electronics technician in Iran. He would have to study for three or four more years to do the same work here, Sefiddashti of Pars Deli was a lawyer.in Teheran. Another [ranian, who was a minister in the Shah’s regime, is now a travel agent. And many of the tranians working as taxi drivers on the North Shore have professional qualifications from fran. But some Iranians have manag- ed to apply their professions in Canada. Farzady said there are 10 Iranian dentists on the North Shore. Others work as engineers and architects.
