Bowen tour

HISTORY BUFFS take heed:
this weekend the Bowen Island
Historians and Memorial
Garden Society are teaming up
for the third annual People,
Plants and Places — a tour of
the island’s historic homes and
gardens (July 24 and 25, from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Tour-goers will walk through
old lush gardens and view his-
toric homes built since 1900,
including the Collins Far-
mhouse, built in 1924 for
Glasgow-born James Collins.

On display outside the far-
mhouse will be paintings by
lone (Betty) Mcintyre (noon to
4 p.m., rain or shine). The new
work and family portraits will
be mounied on easels for easy
viewing access.

Following the art show, Mcln-
tyre has arranged a tea and
parasol event.

New chairwoman

“NORTH VANCOUVER lawyer Margo Spence has been installed as
the new chairwoman of Presentation House Cultural Society.
Spence, who has been a member of the board for about eight
months, takes over for former chairman Gordon Harris, who resign-
ed fate last month citing personal reasons.
Harris said the arrival of a second child in 19 months has made it
- impossible for him to carry out his responsibilities as chairman. He
will, however, remain a board member.

Harris said Sherrin and his wife are also expecting a second child.
Sherrin will not be returning as a board member.

Positive meeting

SPEAKING OF Presentation House, former chair Gordon Harris says
the June 16 meeting between the board and theatre representatives

was “incredibly positive,” and. that the process for creating a
strategic plan for Presentation House Theatre is well under way
(despite the fact that the meeting was boycotted by most of North
Vancouver's theatre community.)

The board is in the process of establishing an interim theatre advi-
sory comrnittee, made up of board members and three members of
the performing arts community, which will look at setting up a
theatre programming committee and initiate planning for the 1993-
94 season.

The board is also working to ensure that ‘non-traditional’ and

minority performance groups have access to the programming |

committee.

Harris says Presentation House Cultural Society executive has ap-
proached a number of theatre peaple to stand for election at the
society’s annual general meeting, now scheduled for early

September. ;
Local theatre representatives have criticized the current board for
being too gallery - oriented and for ignoring the theatre.
