From Page 10 criminal investigations, pro- viding an education on the mob and boxing. A terrific read about a dark and fierce fighter, a man who fought his way into boxing history ® Hurricane by James S. Hirsch, Houghton ifflin, 358 pages, $38.95 pages The life of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter has undergone more scrutiny than a presidential candidate might endure. His story has been elevated to legendary status, the subject of books, a hit song, and now a fea- ture length film. Rubin Carter and John Artis were victims of an injustice that is mind-numb- . ing in its scope. Faisely con- victed of’ a crime they did not commit, they were forced to spend the best’ part of their adult lives in jail. Carter refused to accept his role as prisoner and rebelled against the system which imprisoned him. For twenty-two years Carter's fife was controlled by the state which had wrongly convicted him. Hirsck has produced in this authorized biography, a detailed but very readable book which chronicles one man’s fight for freedom against seemingly insur- mountable odds. A combi- nation of devoted friends, celebrity status, superhuman determination and luck brought Carter to eventual freedom. His journey through the labyrinth of the legal system, the toll it exacted on him and those involved, the look inside the prison are all presented in fascinating detail. Hirsch gives an honest portrait of a man who refused to give up, a man not without flaws who was forced to look deep - dairy case or in the zgr ocery. Hirsch has done a temarkable job at sifting through the thousands of pages of legal arguments to present the key points of the development of Carter's fight. His extensive inter- views and quotes provide insight into every aspect of the case. He has made acces- sible an incredible story, and in the process written an excellent book. @ Mubammad Als: : Ringside by John Miller and Aaron Kenedi, Bulfinch Press, 128 pages, $41 “I am the greatest! I shook np the world! I don’t have a mark on my face! I’m pretty! I’m a bad man!” So said Ali after winning the heavyweight tide for the first time. That was in 1964 and Ali went on to prove he was no big mouth with good footwork. This year Sports Illustrated magazine agreed with him when they named him greatest athlete of the century. Muhammad Ali: Ringside is a fascinating look at this remarkable man. The book is filled with photos from his big fights and great memo- rabilia such as fight posters, tickets even the X-ray of his jaw after Ken Norton broke it. Ringside is also a great read. There are four essays: from Alex Haley, Norman Mailer, Joyce Carol Oates and Peter Richmond, exam- ining the decades from the 60s to the "90s. Interspersed throughout the entire book are quotes from fighters, writers, Ali and more. This book offers a sum- mary of the career of a man who definitely talked the talk and walked the walk.
