Students Protest Budget November, 1975 — Students at Capilano College staged a rally and march Tuesday as part of a strike protesting che provincial govern- ment’s education budget. More than 100 students gathered at the North Vancouver School Board offices at 10 am. Monday, where they began a march to the West Vancouver Schoo! Board offices. Ocher students spent the day in shopping malls amd other public places soliciting signa- tures for 2 petition protesting the government’s budget policy and asking the Department of Education fora firther $60,000. Organizers of the march admitted that the tumout was not up to their expectations. “We were hoping for upwards of 1,000,” said Stewart Jones, student council vice-presi- dent. “When we get to West Van we're soing to geta few people to go mside and present our petition to the schoo! board.” Jones said the march on the school boards was worthwhile, even though their protest is aimed at the provincial government. “Weve got to get the support of of the com- munity first, before we can go to Victoria and make demands,” said Jones. “After all, it is a community college.” The marchers left shortly after 10 a.m. and walked along Marine Drive most of the way. “it’s seven miles but it’s worth it,” said Jones, . Student council president Bill Beli also expressed some disappointment at the turnout for the march. “It’s partly due to the fact that mid-terms are on,” he said, referring to the exaninations that have been going on for more than a weck. “Partly it’s beeause some students thought that by staying, at home they would get the message across.” “There are only four or five ciasses going on at the college now,” Bell said. Many of the marchers were faculty and staff members. Last week, the faculty approved a motion to support the student strike, and agreed not to hold examinations Tuesday. According to a press release issued by Bell, the government budget policy limiting Cap College to a 15 per cenit increase will mean larg- er classes, limited “extras” such as field trips and seminars and fewer library acquisitions. of the week | cae | NOW WITH TWO MONTHS | UNLIMITED CALLING Qex Nokia 5100 series Digital PCS phone is only: Conte?
