Crop Rotation for Best Results

Crop rotation 2lows soil time to
rejuvenate by rotating heavy feeders
with light feeders, and with legumes

Secondly, it inhibits the spread of
insects and diseases, by contain-
ment, particularly soilborne diseases.

The underlying principle is that
once having pianted a crop in a
particuiar site, that crop, (or any of
it’s close relatives), would then be
rotated, or relocated to another
area cf the garden for the next
three to six years. With this in
mind it would obviously be ideal
to garden in raised beds, thus
maintaining the integrity of the
soil. By introducing new plants
from a different group into
different pans of the garden each

year, the destructive insects and
diseases are minimized as their
host plants are removed.

A short list of plant groups that
should be grown together, not
followed in the same spot are:

1. beets, spinach and chard;

2. chives, garlic, leeks, onions and
shallots; 3. beans, lupines and peas;
4. cucumbers, melons, pumpkins
and squash; 5. carrots, dill, parsicy,
Queen Anne's Lace, celery and
chervil; 6. eggpiant, nicotiana,
Peppers, petunias, potatoes and
tomatoes; 7. broccoli, brussels
Sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower,
turnips and radishes; 8. lettuce,
endive, chicory and marigolds. Pian

crop next year!
