SAT., JAN. 25 Scottish Country Dance Classes, for kids aged resident IF your New Year res- olution is to do some volunteer work, con- ’ sider the Host Program as an option. Operated by the North Shore Multicultural Society, the Host program is looking for voluntecrs to spend three hours per week for approxi- mately four to six months "helping newcomers adjust to a new life in Canada. The role of host volunteer is varied — it could be assist- ing: newcomers to fearn ’ ; about available services in the community, helping them make contacts in their field of work, participate in , Tecreational activities or it ‘could be just providing an opportunity for newcomers to ‘practise English and ask ~ questions about the language and culture. At. the same time, host Canadians can learn about new cultures, other lands and different languages; hosts make new friends, and they _. strengthen community life. While the program itself is a national one, the North Shore Host program has been running since July of last year. Since then there has been a steady increase in the number of rewcomers who are looking for Canadian hosts. Some clients have been waiting for up to six months to be matched with a host volunteer. Newcomers like the pro- gram because it represents a chance for them to meet new people and build their social and professional aectwork. And most importantly, they have a sense of belonging in the community through con- tact with their Canadian friends. Host volunteers and clients are carefully matched according to similar inter- ests. Training, orientation and ongoing support is also provided to host volunteers.
