every home sewer, and for
those with hard-to-fit figures,

it is often the principal reason
for starting to sew.

Sew Right

Professional fitting involves
more than measurements — it aiso
incorporates appearance, comfort
and appropriate design and fabric.

In evaluating a garment’s fit,
make sure that:
¢% no area of the garment sags or
bags; ;
© the garment’s shoulders and
waist lie naturally in place;
® vertical lines — the side, front
and back seams — look straight
from beginning to end, with no
waving;

@ the garment’s hem hangs even-
ly;

® sleeves hang straight from the
shoulder, following the arm's nat-
ural position;

@ darts are correctly placed and an
appropriate length.

. Since the human body is not
made up of straight lines. the gar-
ment needs to accommodate its
curves.

Darts play an important role in
achieving a good fit, and are an
essential part of any fitted pattern,
They are drafted onto pattern

For a perfect fit, start by getting
to know the shape and proportions
of your body.

Stand in front of a mirror, take
an objective look at yourself and
make notes.

Begin with a basic pattern, such
as a simple skirt that has two darts
in the: front, two darts in the back

‘and a seam on each side. Transfer

all of the basic lines and darts onto
a piece of muslin and temporarily
sew the garment together.

Try this on and assess the fit;
the darts should be the correct
length and placed precisely.

If necessary, darts can be
lengthened or shortened by mark-
ing the muslin and transferring this
measurement to the pattern.

Their position also can be
adjusted by marking: the exact
location on the muslin and redraft-
ing the pattern's darts.

Some people even require that a

dart be made fuller or - narrower

than the commercial pattern indi-
cates.

For each garment, the front and
back darts should be viewed sepa-
rately and altered if necessary.

Because everyone has a unique
shape, the side seams will not
always fall evenly at the sides.

The seams can easily be moved
by subtracting from the back and
adding the same amount to the
front, or vice versa.

With these basic adjustments,
any garment can be customized for
a perfect fit.
