Chalet’s no-frills food and prices packs ‘em in From page 28 Its new North Vancouver loca- tion opened Aug. 22 and has been busy ever since even though it is just across the parking lot from the perennially popular Red Robin restaurant. Table Hopping sampled the Chalet’s wares on a recent Friday night and the restaurant was packed, with a crowd filling its waiting chamber and heated confrontations over parking spots breaking out in the parking lot immediately in front of the Chalet. Most bizarre. Our food was strictly Swiss Chalet style. Straight meat and stodge. No distracting vegetable gar- nish. In fact no green vegetable at all. Rice, fries or baked potato are the main accompanying options. But diners could also choose a salad or cole slaw. The baked potato comes with fixings, but all are apportioned in single serving plastic tubs — airline food style. The main meat is not bad. Ribs are steamed then charbroiled. The chicken is indeed golden on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. You also get a Swiss Chalet voll and aforementioned famous Chalet sauce with its odd fla- vors of allspice, and that's about it. But it’s cheap and it's popular. Service is provided by crowds of young folk. many in their first real job experience. A tip of the hat to the Chalet for providing that oppor- tunity. Service confusion, however, can tesult. | could have sworn I ordered the Charbroiled Chicken Breast that was supposed to come Jightly brushed with barbecue sauce and charbroiled to perfection, but some- how I ended up with the Rotisserie Barbecued Quarter chicken. I'll leave the final meal comment to the Table Hopping youth division: “Tm full. Great place, Dad. The Chocolate Sundae was really good.” Right you are, young man. It’s not really Swiss and it’s not much of a chalet, but it delivers meat and potatoes at rock bottom prices. For many that’s all that matters for a successful night on the town.
