NORTH VANCOUVER Dis-
trict has been charged with
two Fisheries and one Waste
Management infraction in
connection with the death of
1,000 coho salmon fry on
Mackay Creek on Sept. It,
1993.

Conservation officer Dean
Velkjar said the coho were keptin
a net pen on Mackay Creck as part
of a salmon enhancement project.

The fish died after a large
quantity of chlorinated water was
allegedly released from a pump-
house near Prospect Avenue and
Mackay Creek.

The pumphouse is used to
move drinking water to residential
areas. The pumphouse is main-
tained by North Vancouver
District.

® introducing or allowing a
waste, chlorinated water from the
water supply warks, to be intro-
duced into the environment,

@ depositing a deleterious sub-
stance, chlorinated water, into
water frequented by fish in
Mackay Creek;

@ carrying on work that resulted
in the harnifal alteration, disrup-
tion or disturbance of Mackay
Creek fish habitat.

Preliminary court proceedings
will next be heard on Oct. 6 in
North Vancouver provincial court.

Mackay Creek supports coho,
pink and chum salmon along with
a good population of cutthroat
trout and some steelhead trout.

Fish habitat in the creek has
been adversely affected by com-
mercial industrial plants in the
lower areas and by heavy residen-
tial development its entire length.
