George. ‘‘Instead, we carved
smaller poles that we could take
with us.”

chisel, George and Nattral are us-

the sculpture within the yellow
cedar,

One tool, a large pop bottle-
shaped mallet, is made from the
tree it is now being used on.

Around the site of the carving
lie hundreds of chips and slivers
that have been whisked off by the
skilled hands of the two carvers.

for 18 years.

Both Natrall and George see
their efforts at Lonsdale Quay as
much more than just, as George
put it, ‘‘a great summer gig.”’

‘So much of both the
Squamish and Burrard traditions
and stories have been lost over
time,”’ George says. “The story
we're telling with this pole is one
that has been pieced together from
the stories of our elders,’”

Suddenly, George spots a little
girl stretching her arm under a
rope to get a sliver of cedar.

“Hey, what are you doing
there?” the jovial carver says, a
wink and a twinkle in his eye.

George and Natrall’s perfor-

daily at Lonsdale Quay until Sept.
