McCredie Sports Reporter greatest sport is Revenge can come in many forme. to silence the fans who are expecting more from you; to prove the critics wrong who say you don’t belong in the league; or to show a team that traded you that they made a mistake. Saturday night at the North Shore Winter Club, Mark Finney exacted some sweet revenge on the team that dealt him away over the summer layoff. The West Vancouver native scored a hat-trick in the third period to lead his new team, the North Shore Flames, over his old team, the Grandview Steelers, 6-3 in Pacific Junior International Hockey. League play. In this cellar-dwelling battle of the eight-team league — both teams have been struggling so far this season — the first 40 minutes of play saw both tears showing moments of tight, fast-paced ac- tion, with crisp passing and good skating. : Both teams also showed mo- ments of inconsistency, taking dumb penalties and making defensive errors in their own ends. The first period ended in a scoreless tie, though forwards Gordie Pryde and Andrew Wilson of the Flames had a couple of ex- cellent scoring chances. ’ The second period opened with a player from each team in the penalty box, with the Steelers’ hav- .ing a man advantage seven sc- conds after the face-off. Wilson, a UBC student in his third year with the Flames, scored a short-handed goal on a two- on-one crossing pass in the open- ing minute, giving the Flames a short-lived lead. Stil in the first 60 seconds, Grandview’s Travis Cahill beat a sprawling Vikram Gupta in the * Flames goal to even the game. Two minutes later the Flames answered back when the Grand- view goalie iook a Jacques Plante-like risk and ventured out to his blue line to retrieve a puck GAME OF THE WEEK cleared by a Flames defenceman. Pryde beat the Grandview goalie to the puck, made a quick pass to a trailing Randy Strange, who made no mistake and put the puck in the gaping Grandview. net. Still just four minutes into the second period, Grandview assis- tant captain Craig Knopp tied the score Off a rebound from a Dean Townsend shot. There was no scoring in the re- mainder of the middle period, but the Flames displayed some well- disciplined penalty killing — Rob Tadey in particular — when Jamie Douglas received a _ five-minute major at the 15-minute mark. fn the waning minutes of the period, the Flames were applying relentless pressure on the Grand- view goal crease, finally finding the mark with just 16 seconds to play. Wilson scored his second goal of the night, assisted by Pryde. The Steelers had replied to every Flames goal with one of their own, but with just 16 se- conds left in the period they were content to go into the locker- room down a goal. . The third period belonged to the Flames, and in particular to the Flames left-winger Mark Fin- ney. Finney scored all three of the third-period goals, lifting the Flames to a much-needed, and on this night, well-deserved victory, doubling the Steelers 6-3. Ron Burrows, North Shore Flames vice-president, said that a major factor in the team’s slow start was the loss of their head coach immediately prior to the start of the season. John Wiltsie stepped down from his coaching position for persona! reasons. His replacements, former midg- et coaches Aldo Bruno and Greg Swecera, are hoping that the Flames’ Saturday night win will be a turning point in what is still a very young season.) The Flames play in Abbstsford on Friday night, then host Poco on Saturday night at 9 p.m. at the North Shore Winter Club.
