24 - Wednesday, July 22, 1992 - North Shore News Q has wondertul seaside location From page 21 wind is blowing and how busy the nearby industrial waterfront is, the diesel fumes might chase you back indoors, but the restaurant's third-floor outlook is hard to beat. Much on the not-so-pasitive side of our early Q experience could be attributed to the growing pains familiar to all new restaurants. Service was slow, and the res- taurant’s use of a ghetto blaster delivering electric guitar squallings on its patio and a different, yet no more appealing soundtrack in- doors, left Table Hopping staff feeling as if we were eating on the beach stranded between the tran- sistorized rivalry of two radio sta- tions. Our meal began with a big half- round of good, fresh sourdough bread. A Bocconini Tomato Salad ($6.95) followed. Its small wheels of baby mozzarella cheese and tomatoes were served on a bed of purple kale and were finished with a dressing of soya-ginger and balsarnic vinaigrette. A good start. But our main course selections were slow in arriving, and when they did most of them were over- cooked. The exception was an order of Calamari ($5.95), which featured a big plate of squid rings, lightly seasoned and delicately fried. Our Samosa ($6.50) was inter- estingly seasoned and came with a good mango chutney, but it was overcooked, A three-rib plate of Texas Pork Ribs ($8.95; five-ribs, $11.95; seven ribs, $14.95) looked promis- ing. The ribs were about a foot long, brushed lightly with a hickory smoked barbecue sauce. They were served with cottage- fried potatoes and two skewers of grilled vegetables. The sibs were meaty, but, like the accompanying potatoes, were overdone. Again, most of these shortcom- ings could be attributed to the newness of the Q’s staff, kitchen and management. The Q has a wonderful seaside outlook with a new informal inte- tior and lounge, but it needs better execution and much better kitch- en production if it is to avoid becoming another Lonsdale Quay Hotel X. CIRO CLASSICO — LIBRANDI. $9.25. (ITALY) From Calabria, the toe of the “boot” of Italy, this traditional rustic red has character to spare. Like Portuguese Primaveras, huge fruit dominates when it is young, making it taste a bit like home- made wine that’s been harnessed by a minimum of technology. Needs to breathe a bit and is at its best enjoyed in a shady spot outdoors, from a tumbler, Italian style, with good bread, olive oil, onions and the ripest cheese you can face. Reputed to age marvellously if you're patient, and Italian Olym- pic athletes are said to carry ona 2,500-year tradition by training on this pot-rocker. They may not win a lot of gold medals, but hey, it’s a happy camp. — by john Moore ONLY 5 DAYS LEFT TO SAVE FURNITURE ON SALE Al SEARS UNTIL SUNDAY FROM SLEEP SETS TO SOFAS, IT’S ALL PRICED TO GO...FAST!
