District 1990 graduates, the North Vancouver school board was told Tuesday. By Patrick Raynard Contributing Writer Ed Collins, the school district's coordinator of administrative ser- vices, praised teachers for their work in bringing the students to levels well above the provincial averages in every subject. Handsworth and Seycove sec- ondary ‘schools were also repre- sented by their respective prin- cipals, each with scholarship suc- cess stories to tell the gathering. Collins, who has been with the district for 30 years, said that eight per cent of the school district’s 1990 grads won moncy from the Ministry of Education, a rate 2% times the provincial average of three per cent. ‘In the 1990 class, 44 graduates are getting full scholarships to in- stitutions of higher education, ranging from $800 to $20,000 for each year of studies,’’ Collins said. “One of our graduates recently got the highest marks ever re- corded at UBC,"’ he added. Eight of the scholarships came from the provincial government. “Over $60,000 was donated by service clubs, community groups and the parents advisory council,”’ he added. ‘*The graduation cere- mony night was a very proud evening for all of us.”" ‘*The dedicated staff at Seycove work hard every day, and we work to make ourselves better teachers. This is the highest number of any school on the North Shore, and the highest per capita of any school as well. “Of the 196 erads last year, 94 wrote scholarship exams,"’ Feyer said. “One student had seven schol- arship scores — only 10 are offerd in total and ke is now at MIT."’ ‘Handsworth sends over 75 per cent of its grads on to university,” he said, adding that the school will be 30 years old next September. “‘More students are writing for scholarships, as they need the thousand dollars. The fees at universities are unbelievable. ‘“*And university entrance re- quirements are going up every year, so the kids know that they need more than a C-plus average,"’ Feyer said. Feyer also praised his teaching colleagues for writing more than 100 letters of reference for gradu- ates heading for universities out- side B.C. One teacher alone wrote more than 30 letters. In the school district overall, nearly 100 graduates received cash awards of $1,000 each from the provincial government. Six school district grads got scholarships to institutions outside B.C. and in the U.S.A. Two more received scholarships to study in Asia for one year. 988-0213 (ES.
