& ~ Wednesday, Juty 4, 1990 - North Shore News Streetcar could transform Lonsdale area Dear Editor: The suggestion that old streetcar #153, that was in service up and down Lonsdale until 1947, might be soon restored and put into ser- vice is an outstanding idea. Both loca! government and local merchants should jump at the chance to help share the costs to restore and implement this great heritage piece. If you stop to think about it for a moment, Lonsdale, especially lower Lons- dale, has the San Francisco-like grades for such a vehicle. It could prove to be a great tourist attrac- tion and would inevitably enhance the business for local merchants. The potential traffic problems it might pose would be minimal, I think, as the idea would be to serve lower Lonsdale and the Quay area. To reconstruct the original tracks and so on alf the way up Lonsdale would be in- credibly costly and would indeed pose traffic problems. The opportunity is there to transform lower Lonsdale into a unique heritage area, something stopping just short of a theme park. The SeaBus, the bus loop and interconnecting roads are ideal for bringing people into this area as they already do. On a shared cost basis, even with public donations being ac- cepted, this ‘‘Streetcar named Lonsdale 153’’ could prove to be a real boost to the area and mer- chants. It would also add a lot more character to an area that al- ready has character. T.E.
