FROM PAGE At lacking “honor, respect and responsibility” in disposing of the site for commercial purposes. » Residents, she wrote, had been told that General Odium had donated the park to UBC with stipulations that it be used for an educational and/or recreational pur- pose. “I am disgusted,” con- tinued Hall, “that such a gift ‘so generously given, and presently containing so much beauty, could be destroyed and obliterated. “I know the university has received many proposals for Rockwoods Estate, from Educational Centres to Aqua Centres, to Bird Sanctuaries, to Theological Retreats, to parks, but each, though conforming to General Odlum’s wishes, has been turned down by the (UBC) Board of Governors. “I am shocked at the deliberately profiteering. ‘money-grabbing’ scheme that has led the Board of Governors to even consider an option to purchase Rockwoods Estate by a development corporation devoid of any imagination or consideration for the unique park. “You have. clearly demonstrated the highest form of disregard for gifts you receive ... Where is your honour? Where is your respect? Where is your responsibility, or are you devoid of them all?” UBC maintains, however, that it is acting fully in ac- cordance with the spirit and intent of the Odlum gift. In an interview Monday Brant Ducey, UBC director of information, told The News that the deed of gift by General Odlum made provision for the sale of the Rockwoods property under certain conditions. “Our view is that the intent was not that the property could never be sold,” he said. Ducey stressed that Cressey had not yet pur- chased the estate from the university but merely had an option on it pending ap- proval of the development plan by West Van council. “Rockwoods is still in our possession at the moment,” he said. Among the options he suggested were: —Refusal of a subdivision permit. —Rezoning of the land to protect the amenity. —Designation of the property as a heritage site. —A redaction in the number of dwelling units. —Imposition of a mandatory development permit.
