Long pipes carrying hot water
from the water heater to household
faucets waste energy through heat
loss. All hot water pipes should be
wrapped with insulation, And if
you can do it, the water heater
should be moved as close as possi-
ble to the major points of use.

Fix any leaking hot water taps.

whole tankful of hot water in one
week,

CLOTHES WASHER

You probably know by now that
warm and cool water will wash
most fabrics as well as or better
than hot water. That’s great
because you can really save by us-
ing hat water only when really
necessary.

The right temperature for
washing depends on the type of
fabric and what it’s been soiled
with. Cold water detergents work
with water 15°C or warmer. And
you can use cold rinses for
everything.

Using the water level and cycle
most appropriate to each load and
trying to make up full loads with
each washing are also important
ways to save energy and money.

LIGHT ENERGY

Household lighting can also be
more energy efficient. Rooms
painted and decorated in lighter
colors need fewer watts of elec-
tricity to light them. And if you
really want a lot of light for your
watts, fluorescent lamps are about
three times more efficient than in-
candescent lamps.
