VICTIMS OF drunk drivers are remembered by the Mothers Against Drunk Drivers in the annual Candlelight Vigil. MADD groups lead a continent-wide crusade to reduce drinking/driving injuries and deaths through tough laws, active enforcement and community awareness. SPECIAL WEEK Mothers hold vigil for victims | DRINKING AND DRIVING IN B.C. MOTHERS Against Drunk Drivers ‘SVeek was proclaimed for the week of Dec. 8 to 15 in most of B.C.'s_ cities, townships and municipalities. The special week recognized the work that MADD does to increase the public’s awareness of the drinking/driving issue. As a part of the week’s obser- vances, group members in several communities conducted a Candle- light Vigil to remember those killed and injured in alcohol-related crashes. This poignant event was held Monday, Dec. 8. According to Sally Gribble, MADD’s B.C. president, the Can- dlelight Vigil serves as a reminder of the devastating effects of im- paired driving on our highways. ‘‘Most people join together with family and friends during the holi- day season to celebrate in their love and joy. Tragically, too often this celebration is destroyed for many families by the criminal act of people who drive under the in- fluence of alcohol and other drugs,’’ says Gribble.
