Jaunches campaign to raise funds NORMAN LONG, chairman of USC Canada’s Board of Directors, recently launched the agency’s an- nual fund-raising campaign for over $3 million, to support self- help programs in six countries in Asia and Africa. “USC Canada’s primary role in the development and management of aid program is as a funding agency,"’ said Long. *‘Local representatives are assuming increased responsibility for development and supervising programs and assisting in the strengthening of indigenous non- governmenta! organizations. “USC Canada is placing even greater emphasis on the quality of programming and Ottawa-based program officers have stepped up overseas surveys from one to two visits a year.’” USC Canada was founded by Dr. Lotta Hitschmanova in 1945. A pioneer in international development, Dr. Hitschmanova led her agency from postwar relief to complex development programs. “Dr. Lotta was a practical hu- manitarian, and her unquestion- able integrity earned her the respect and confidence of Cana- dians from coast to coast. This is the legacy she left us. Programs change from year to year, but the USC philosophy of careful stewardship, the insistence on a partnership which places responsi- bility on the shoulders of both donor and recipient, and the policy of never outstaying your usefulness in any country, remains unchang- ed.” Grants and donations are received from the Canadian Inter- national Development Agency (CIDA); the provincial gov- ernments of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba; foundations, clubs, groups; and individuals across Canada. .
