NORTH SHORE garbage will be turned into heat and electricity if a Vancouver engineering company has its way. Integ (Intercontintal Engineering) wrote a letter to North Vancouver City council, asking for a chance to demonstrate how they could turn the North Shore's garbage problem into an opportunity to create energy. “The three North Shore municipalities presently produce a combined ton- nage of garbage of ap proximately 55.000 tons annually. sufficient to produce all of the heating requirements of a building complex such as the Park Royal shopping and This quantty is office centre Woodcroft apartment complex.” the letter says. Gary Payne and Ralph Hall told council they disagreed with a staff report that recommended the City should keep the present minimum size for single family home lots. The two aldermen said that many people no longer need homes with three or four bedrooms, but would still like the privacy and in- dependence of their own home on their own lot. “The size of lots and the size of homes has to decrease ,” Hall said. ew oO By TERRY LAVENDER Payne said the staff report on small lots should have ex- amined possible locations for small lot houses, instead of trying to show why small lot subdivisions couldn't work. He said smali houses on small lots could be mixed in with normal size houses and with other residential developments, such as apart- ment buildings and garden homes. In the report, the City’s director of development and licensing § services, Frank Morris said small lots would not necessarily be cheaper than larger ones. Morris also wasn't en- thusiastic about making such lots available in the Tempe The Exercise Place A9 - Wednesday, June 15, 1983 - North Shore News Heights area of the City. “I believe the small lot proposal is bound to generate additional hostilities with respect to finalizing the Community Plan for this area, and con- ducting a rezoning with respect to the multiple fami- ly portions of this develop- ment,” Morris wrote.
