If there is no Canadian representative in the country you are visiting, get in touch with either the British or American Con- sulate. Our Embassy representatives will give you advice and act as a friend in court. But do not expect too much from them; you are subject to the laws of the country you are visiting. Here's a quick checklist that will keep you out of trouble: Carry your passport at all times safely. It is your best means of identification. Take out medical in- surance before you leave Canada. Unforeseen medical costs could easily bankrupt you. Does Canada have an Embassy or Consulate in the country you are visiting? If so, know where it is located. Check in with the Consulate and let them know where you are going and how long you wil] be staying. Check out with them when you leave the country. If you are visiting a country that does not have a Canadian Embassy, check in advance as to which country looks after Canadian travellers. In some countries it will be the Bntish Con- sulate, in others’ the American.
