The establiskment of the commission this
summer was fully within the constitutional
powers of the government of the day, which
is equally within its rights to accept or reject
the findings of such a commission. The fact
that Premier Beanectt may also now call a fall
election at amy momient — and that the
Warren recommendations ‘endorsed by his
cabinet added seven new MLAs in what are
predominantly Socred ridings — does not
alter that basic situation.

have been in 1975, shortly before his election

NDP.

Spending by governments
in Canada has gone berserk
and, finally, it appears the
public is starting to notice.
One barometer of public
Opinion is a recent national

poll that indicated
widespread support of
restraints on civil service
salaries, but that’s only the
tip of an iceberg of taxpayer
anger. For the average
Canadian there is an endless
list of questions.

How is it, for instance,
that few governments are
laying off employees, while
companies large and small
have been forced to cut the

payroll as they attempt to
survive? Bankruptcies and
receiverships have reached
near-record levels. yet our
civil servants continue to
spend as if a $20-billion
deficit didn’t matter.

To say that our
bureaucrats, mandarins and
government officials are
pampered is to understate
the case. Here are a few
examples of the kinds of
perquisites they've handed
themselves.
