i GE community roundup ii West Van student wins top award THE MEDAL or Merit, awarded for outstanding services, was received by local Cub Master D. Elwood Platt of the 8th Glenmore West Vancouver Cub Pack during the West Vancouver District Annual Meeting and Brunch held at the Hollyburn Country Club recently. Mr. Platt was recognized for his outstanding leadership qualities and for his service to Scouting. By OLGA RUSKIN A Sentinel Secondary student, Kevin Colbow, 17, 586 St. Andrews Place, has won a $9,000 Gordon M. Shrum Scholarship for Simon Fraser University. The entrance scholarship, one of 10 awarded annually, is awarded to students of exceptional academic promise entering SFU from high school and is $1,000 for each of nine semesters at- tended. Over 90 applicants applied for the scholarship, Nominations for which are made by high = school principals. Doug Player, Sentinel principal, described Kevin as “a super kid. It couldn't have happened to anyone better. He’s the kind of student that makes a school go. He’s totally involved in the school and community and manages time extremely effectively.” Kevin has achieved an “A” standing in every course he has taken at high school and has been at the top of the honour roll every year. In the 1981 Commonwealth Essay Competition Kevin finished among the top ten in the Commonwealth with his essay on “Politics in In- ternational Sports.” He is keenly interested in science, which he is going on to study at SFU. Last year his working model of a solar pump display won first prize at the school's science fair, as a result of which he and his partner were asked to give a presentation at Hollyburn school to visiting science teachers, then later exhibited the model at a conference of B.C. science teachers. Added to his academic background is an extensive involvement io athietics, When in grade cight he received the George McGowan Memorial Trophy trophies. He plays on the school’s senior basketball team of which he is captain. In swimming he has earned eight trophies, 22 medals and over 300 ribbons.
