C4 - Wednesday, December 24, 1980 - North Shore News Fly now - the price can only go higher And cigarettes do cost $3 a pack in Europe trayel- wise Many readers have been asking lately, “Should I cancel my visit to the Middie East?” It isn’t looking good. _ T'd go — but only if I were going by myself— no family to worry about. It would be just about the last place I'd plan for Brian and me to visit, leaving the kids behind, unless we truly wanted them to be raised by their legal guardians. The situation is so ex- plosive that I'd want to be sure that one of us stayed back to raise the family and the one who went had a cur- rent will. I've had some very dis- quietening reports lately on the effectiveness of our con- sular services overseas. The only personal experience I've had is in Argentina — when I found the consul unreachable and the dame who was running the swit- chboard barely able to speak “Englesshe”. I gave up and solved the problem myself - DEAR BARBARA: We wanted to go to England next year - 1982 - as we have been saving quite a while for this trip. My husband thinks that with the recent price in- creases everywhere that we should go as soon as possible. I hate to go in debt but if it's necessary we will do so. Opinion please. ANSWER: How much would you have to borrow to go this spring? I don't like the look of current reports from airlines. The fares are up ap- proximately 24 per cent but the operating costs are up in the 27 per cent range. What puzzles me is that every air- craft I've flown this year is nearly full. The airlines scream that they must have an 8) per cent load to make by Barbara McCreadie the flights profitable and that may be true. My bet is that the airfares will jump 20 per cent within a year. Britain is so bogged down in the current inflation that their prices can't do anything but jump. The time will come when any traveller, anywhere, wil] have to pay an Outrageous price. Someone, somewhere, is making a killing. It makes me sick but | haven't any choice other than “stay home” which boggles the mind of a gypsy like me. If you can borrow the money at a fixed rate, I'd hustle over now. By next year you might be unable to. DEAR BARBARA: Can you rcommend any books that we might buy to facilitate our forthcoming visit to Europe? ANSWER: Not one! Use the hbrary — your tax dollars go to support it. If you see a publication that you want to read fill in a library request form and you'll get it. The only travel books I'vé ever bought — Arthur From- mer’s guides to cheap tavel, are outdated within a few months. Photocopy or hand copy any pages that you think might be of help. DEAR BARBARA: Are cigarettes really $3 a package in Europe? ANSWER: Yes. In some places you can buy on the “black” and cut the price down to two bucks. Take care — a raid might be imm- nent and a visit to the local slammer ts to be avoided. Never leave a package of Cigarettes on a restaurant table. It is an unspoken courtesy that you do NOT offer your package to others seated at your table.
