The party was delightful.
A few of us carried on for
coffee, later, and two friends
— Jim McKeachie and Reid
Moir from CPAir escorted
me back into the parking lot
to rescue Lemonade.

They waited while | fired-
up her cranky engine and
then waved me on my way.
Because I had to drive
through the dark East-end of
Vancouver, I carefully
locked the doors and prayed
that my little car wouldn't go
into her cough-splutter-and-
die routine! She ran like a
clock.

I pulled into our driveway
and tried to get out! Nasty
old lady decided she wanted
company — and the bloody
doors wouldn't open. Picture
me scrambling over seats,
using my best profanity,

' especially when I sat down
hard on the emergency
brake.

“Did you try the key?”
asked the garage mechanic
the next morning.

“Of course. Five or ten
times. She just won't
unlock!”

“Let me give it a try.”

Click. Open.

My dream is that someday
Lemonade will fail me right
in front of a Maharaja in a
Rolls Royce. I should be so
lucky! Her current batting-
average is three tow trucks,

ANSWER: Your charter
flights will probably give you
the cheapest rates to
Europe. An added ad-
vantage, with Wardair, will
allow you to enter Europe in

one city and leave from

another.

If you purchase missed-
flight insurance, you will be
recompensated if you are ill.
Meanwhile, you'll have to
buy another ticket and wait
for the insurance money to
cover the missed flight.

If you miss the flight due
to any other reason, you are
just plain out of luck. That
would make me mighty ill!

If you want to return
either sooner or later than
your scheduled flight you
can’t.

I always advise people
travelling by charter to allow
at least 24 hours “grace”
before leaving. For example,
if your return flight departs
from London — arrive a day
ahead. What if a rail strike,
or a flood or a bomb
prevents you from arriving at
the airport on time?

The flight departs — with
or without you!

DEAR BARBARA: My
husband was born and raised
in Northern Ireland. He ts 85
years old and wants to visit
his birth-country before he
dies. Is this safe? What
precautions would you take
if you were visiting there?

ANSWER: [ wouldn’t visit! I
understand why your
husband would want to go
but the conditions in that
country aren't settled
enough for me to recom-
mend it to anyone. I could
make all kinds of suggestions
— including bomb-proof
vests but that doesn't
eliminate the real danger.
Many insurance com-
panies include North Ireland
on their lists of “war zones”

and invalidate your = in-
surance when you visit
there.

However, at 85, your
husband may feel that he
doesn't care a lot about
physical danger and the visit
is more important. The only
precautions I would suggest

are staying away from
anything that looks like a
riot, never pick up an

unattended parcel and avoid
areas that have been niot-
prone such as Belfast —
especially near the line of
demarkation between
Protestant and Catholic. I'd
be very careful about what 1
said public about the strife.

him out as fast as possible.

Have your accommoda-
tion booked and paid for
before you leave, unless you
plan to stay with relatives.
Younger people can go and
search but elderly people
can be totally exhausted by
the long flight and need a
quick spot to crash. Arrange
with the airlines for special
food or pre-boarding if your
husband might require this.

Try to arrange seats close
to the washroom. To do this,
arrive at the airport at least
two hours before flight time.

best time for strolling is
when the rest of the
passengers are watching the
movie.

you please explain § the
process of getting a
passport? A long time ago I
read your column when you
explained something about
“one stop shopping”. I don’t
want to spend days
organizing this, so help me
to make it as easy as
possible.

ANSWER: All Canadian
post offices have the forms.
Pick one up gn your next
visit. You will also require a
birth certificate or proof of
citizenship. Read over the
list of guarantors — in-
cluding your doctor, lawyer,
pastor or local police. Have
your passport pictures
taken, choose a guarantor,
have him sign the whole
thing and present it all to the
local passport office. Easy,
eh?

If you live outside a
metropolitan area, mail your
documents double registered
to the nearest government
office. Allow a minimum of
two weeks. If you live in an
area serviced by a local

passport office, they can get
the job done in four working
days.
