14 - Sunday, December 30, 1990 - North Shore News FASHION Eyewear enters next century AS THE final decade of this century begins, one thing is certain: we can brace ourselves for the bar- rage Of predictions we'll be hearing oa what daily life will be like starting with the year 2000. According to some of the most radical prophecies, many of our familiar routines will be very different. In the 2ist century our travel vehicles will speed through magnetic fields without touching the ground. Our homes will be wired with electronic sensors for climate control, food preparation, and clothing maintenance. We'll *‘talk’’ to each other differently, too. There will be no such thing as being ‘‘away from the phone’’ because we'll have our personal com- municators strapped to our wrists or embedded in our thumbnails. Although many of these futuristic reports seem fike impossible dreams to us, scientific experts state that much of the technology that will prevail in our future is already in place, and has been for at least 20 years. What we are looking for now are new and practical applications of *‘far out’ technology that will enhance our everyday life. For example, Marchon Eyewear, a leader in the optical business, is among the first to apply space- technology to something as ordinary as a pair of eyeglasses. They are introducing a new metal frame that has ‘‘memorized"* its shape. Called Autofiex, it can be wrapped around a finger, bent in half, twisted like a pretzel, and still snap back to its original shape. The frame appears to be an_ incredible breakthrough in modern technology, yet the idea of “‘metal with memory’? came from NASA in the 1960s. The early version of a ‘‘memory encoded metal’’ required that the metal be heated before it would return to its original shape. In the 1990s version used in these glasses, the “memory’’ works at room temperature. This new development represents a simple refinement of ex- isting technology. According to eyewear professionals, most people ace hard on their glasses. Frames get sat on, pushed up into the hair like a headband, crammed into pockets or backpacks, and smashed into handbags or attache cases. Consequenily, the idea of an almost indestructible pair of eyeglass frames holds tremen- dous appeal, both for practical and economic reasons.
