Now, kitchens are party rooms, meeting places, and the centre of the home. ‘Those functions are all reflected in the Silver Georgie award-winning design of North --- Vancouver’s Lyn Rankin. The annual award is ~ sponsored by the Canadian Home. Builders’ -. Association of B.C. Rankin, who owns _ Applecross Kitchens, won the award for best kitchen renovation. “The kitchen is not just where you cook : food, it’s a feature of the home,” she said. “It’s become another entertainment room.” ‘The renovation of the North Vancouver kitchen included knocking out a wall and mov- ing it back five feet, and the resulting space was “.. very large. Her clients wanted a “furniture” look “ gather than a “kitchen” look, in order to blend .. the kitchen with the rest of the home. “. For the cabinets, they used a custom-built ~ maple raised panel door, with a light cream glaze, “a colour which carries throughout the house. A desk and file drawers are built into the _ kitchen design, meant to be “totally unobtru- ~ sive” and not to look like'an office. ~: Atelevision and stereo, becoming more com- mon in kitchen ‘renovations, are hidden behind aie THE kitchen has a. small work space with a desk and two file drawers. cabinet doors. . Two sinks allow more than one person to prepare a meal, reflecting a family approach to cooking. A warming oven, where food can be kept fresh, is a benefit for a frequent entertainer. The floor tile is porcelain, and the backsplash behind the stove is a rough-hewn tumbled mar- ble. The granite counter top, named “blue bar- racuda,” is a blue-and-black pattern with a hint of gold. . Rankin says she uses local companies as much as possible, allowing a quicker completion of ren- ovation projects. ’asmus honoured f _Mareie Good profession.
